We can’t stress enough how important it is to harden the OS that is hosting the Exchange Server. It might seem obvious to you but, in fact, many IT professionals seem to forget about this first basic step. You can try to harden the OS by yourself, or use some of the tools available out there to help you. The important thing here is to disable all unnecessary services and to patch the server regularly.

Citrix XenDesktop on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V: Best Practices

hypervIn this article we’ll discuss best practices for deploying and managing a VDI environment based on Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.

Microsoft’s Hyper-V is a free product that was first released with Windows Server 2008. It is a hypervisor-based platform supporting virtual guest operating systems. With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, new features were introduced to Hyper-V. One neat feature is live migration. This allows you to migrate a running virtual machine (VM) from one physical host to another. You can also add or remove storage from a VM while it is running.

If you’re still in the design phase of your VDI, Citrix has a design guide available, “XenDesktop Design Guide for Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V”. Besides the required hardware, you will need Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager R2 (SCVMM), Citrix Desktop Delivery Controller (DDC), and Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS). Automating Data Collection for Your Custom Monitors

Once you have learned how easy is to create Monitis custom monitor using simple Windows scripts, you may be ready to deploy those scripts in your productions server. Windows makes it very easy to run a program periodically so that you can feed your custom monitor with fresh data at the most suitable time for your environment.

In the following examples, we assume that you have already created and tested the scripts that creates and uploads data to your custom monitors, as explained in this series of articles: Start Exploring Monitis API with cURL and How to Monitor Windows Servers with VBScript, WMI and Monitis.

So, as an example, you may have one script for each custom monitor, named pushData1.vbs, pushData2.vbs, etc. We also assume that all necessary scripts are stored on a local folder, such as c:\monitis.

All versions of Windows includes the Task Scheduler, but it appears slightly different between the operating system versions.
