Monitis and M3 at Velocity 2012

Velocity 2012

Last week I was honored to be invited to the famous Velocity 2012 conference in Santa Clara California, hosted by O’Reilly. Monitis was one of the silver sponsors. It was a great opportunity for me to meet the wonderful team I’ve been working with for the last year.
Velocity is all about web and cloud computing. A truly great place to learn about new technologies and keep up with bleeding edge developments.

Getting to the Monitis booth I must admit I was slightly disappointed to find out there was no demonstration of any Custom Monitors capabilities.
Custom Monitors when tailored as turnkey solutions are truly a very important aspect of monitoring server and application uptime.
Enough talking, lets get some work done.

Monitis Monitor Manager Raw Commands Explained

free-website-monitoringIncentive for raw commands

M3 (or its newer version which you should be using – M3v3) can do pretty much. However it can’t do anything.
M3 is good at timing execution of commands, apply simple parsing and upload the data to Monitis. Allowing you as the SysAdmin (and end-user of M3) to easily shape and design Custom Monitors for your system improving overall system uptime and stability.
Many times this is indeed what happens when trying to monitor different applications. The simple process of ‘Execution -> Parsing -> Reporting’ gets the job done. What happens when it doesn’t?
Well, I’ll tell you what happens – you are left a bit puzzled and think you’ll have to implement the Custom Monitors API which Monitis provide. True – until not long ago.
M3v3 bring you ‘Raw Commands’ capability in its last version.

Linux Series 1: Dedicated Linux server – Host your own

dedicated linux server hostingWelcome to a new article on “Linux Dedicated Hosting” and how to host your own web server. This will be an ongoing series with the end goal being hosting your own domain (www.yoursitehere.com) and allowing others the ability to buy server space from you and make a profit online. The first step is to get our server operating system up and running and configuring the needed tools and updates, I will be using Ubuntu Linux 10.10 as my “OS” and will be setting up a LAMP server which stands for “Linux, Apache HTTP server, MySQL, and PHP ” so we first open the terminal “Cntrl + Alt + T” or you can go to “Applications >Accessories >Terminal” either way is fine. Once we have the terminal open we type in:

sudo apt-get install tasksel lamp=server

enter our password for root and press enter. After our packages have downloaded in the terminal we type sudo tasksel (tasksel package provides a simple interface for users who want to configure their system to perform a specific task. This program is used during the installation process, but users can also use tasksel at any time.)  we choose LAMP server and enter.

Low overhead and reliable CPU/memory monitoring using Monitis Custom Monitors

M3 – The Custom Monitors Swiss Toolmonitis m3

M3 has been around for a while, receiving numerous improvements on the way. We can gladly announce it as a mature infrastructure now for server monitoring, together with Monitis. M3 lets you, the end user, easily configure checks and upload the data to Monitis.
And this time – we’ll survey some of the recent additions to M3 together with a nice little example that will measure CPU and memory.

M3 compute / post process plugins

Many times when collecting raw monitoring data, some post processing has to be done, to “beautify” it.
M3 support these type of plugins in the ‘Compute‘ directory.
The README on github provides a description for these plugins, however I decided it is in place to truly explain one of the examples.
Lets have a look at the Math.pm example.
