Benefits of Monitoring Active Directory

As a server administrator, you want to make sure you create the best possible experience for users. For users to reliably gain access to Active Directory, it must be managed and monitored to make sure it functions properly.

Monitoring Active Directory is essential to ensure that directory data remains consistent and users have uninterrupted access to their account and domain resources they require access to.

Monitor Active Directory with VBScript on Monitis

Using scripting and the Custom Monitor functionality in Monitis you can monitor not only system metrics but also how other resources are used.

To give an example we’ll use a scenario that involves an Active Directory security group used to grant access to a color printer on your print server. In your organization you may have several administrators and you want to maintain control on how resource access is granted. One way to establish this is to monitor he number of users in the security group and set up an alert when a user is added or removed from the monitored group.

Active Directory Replication

This is the 4rd article in our Active Directory series. Previously we discussed the structure of Active Directory and provided best practices for Active Directory-integrated DNS. In this article we’ll talk about replication.

Those of you who administered a Windows NT domain are familiar with the concept of a Primary Domain controller (PDC) with one or more Backup Domain Controllers (BDC). The primary domain controller was responsible for managing the master copy of the domain database. It was responsible for replicating any changes to the backup domain controllers. All changes had to be performed on the PDC who then replicated these changes to the BDCs. In effect this meant that when the PDC was unavailable, no changes were made to the domain database, obviously a limitation.

Best Practices for Active Directory-Integrated DNS

This is the second article in our series about Active Directory. In this article, we’ll discuss DNS and Active Directory integration and give you some best practices for your DNS server administration.

DNS is an important prerequisite of Active Directory. Without it, Active Directory will not function, or should we say, you can’t install or promote a server to a domain controller without having a DNS server either locally on that server or somewhere else on your network. It is the primary name resolution service for Active Directory.

Active Directory Replication Topology

In this article in our series covering Active Directory, we’ll discuss the replication topology. The route replication traffic travels through a network is called the Replication Topology. Replication only occurs between two domain controllers at a time and, by doing so, the information in a forest is synchronized between all domain controllers.

Each domain controller runs a process called the Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC). The KCC regenerates the replication topology for the domain partitions contained on a domain controller. It typically runs at a specific interval of 15 minutes end designates the replication routes between domain controllers that more most favorable at a given time.
