Bandwidth monitoring with ntop & Monitis

ntop bandwidth monitor

ntop is a very simple yet powerful bandwidth monitor which outputs various statistics counters in RRD.
RRD – Round Robin Database – is a very handy framework for saving server performance counters in a ring buffer.
We can say that if we would like to graph network performance, ntop does most of the hard work for us and all we have left to do is to graph the counters.
Among the counters ntop exposes there are:

  • Total bytes per interface
  • Total HTTP, DHCP, DNS, NetBIOS bytes per interface
  • Interface throughput
  • IGMP, ARP statistics

And speaking of graphing, we have Monitis, which can graph any counter we can think of. I have an idea – lets graph ntop data with Monitis!

Superb Real User Webpage Performance Monitoring with Jiffy and Monitis

Webpage performance

Web page performance as opposed to website performance is a bit more of an intricate job requiring familiarization with what is actually served on your website and how your web pages are woven together.
If we’re talking about website performance – we most likely refer to web server performance – how fast requests are being served or what’s the percentage of failed requests for instance.
Opposed to that, web page performance, or at least what I am referring to is the equivalent of asking the following invaluable questions:

  • How fast/slow is my web page in general?
  • Are there excessively slow parts at my web page?
  • If my web page is indeed slow, where is the bottleneck?

And guys, for this, there is a solution. It is a really handy utility called jiffy-web.

Managing and Monitoring SharePoint Server 2010: Configuring the Usage Database

This article is the second article in our series about SharePoint. In our first article we provided a few SharePoint basic system performance counters that you can use to monitor the overall health of the server itself that is running SharePoint; a requirement before you can monitor SharePoint effectively and detect and identify possible bottlenecks. In this article we’ll discuss SharePoint monitoring more in depth and provide some best practices.

SharePoint 2010 offers a number of built-in monitoring features for diagnosing problems and performance. By default diagnostic logging is enabled and while most of the time these default settings will be sufficient, there might be times when you want to make changes to these settings. For example, if you are making a major change to your environment, you can configure a more verbose level of logging to track more closely if everything is working as planned.
