MonitorSNMP enables MIB browser

Free network monitoring service is adding professional features.

Press Release

San Jose 16 June, 2009 Monitis Inc., a leading provider of affordable, easy-to-use, enterprise class, systems management software, adds MIBs browsing to its free network monitoring service MonitorSNMP, making SNMP monitoring easy for network engineers.

A management information base (MIB) is a type of database used to manage the devices in a communications network. It comprises a collection of objects in a (virtual) database used to manage entities (such as routers and switches) in a network. MonitorSNMP monitors values of these objects and MIBs contain useful information about these objects. There are a large number of MIBs defined by both standards organizations like the IETF, private enterprises and other entities.

The new feature of MonitorSNMP allows browsing of the database by navigating the virtual object tree and finding appropriate objects according to the user’s needs. By using this tree users may instantly add monitoring of the selected object per any network device in their network. Besides standard MIBs the user may upload any MIB file. The current MIBs depository contains a large number of MIBs from well known brands like Cisco/Linksys, Microsoft, HP, Juniper Networks etc.

“Monitis is committed to providing free but advanced services to its community.” says Hovhannes Avoyan, CEO and Founder of Monitis, “One of Monitis’ free services, Mon.itor.Us, is already a recognized Internet name and it is massively used for web servers monitoring. MonitorSNMP is a similar product that we are developing for the network professionals.”

MonitorSNMP is a hosted service, so users don’t need to have a dedicated server and installed software, and they don’t have all the maintenance problems that go with them. Instead they just need to download a small footprint agent and run it on any Linux, Windows, FreeBSD or Solaris machine, and use it as a local monitoring point. The performance data will be submitted by the agent to MonitorSNMP central server via HTTPS protocol, and will be instantly available from the Web. A great advantage of this approach is that in a matter of minutes network specialists can setup the monitoring of the distributed network.

Monitis is planning to launch new free services in coming weeks.

Monitis Adds Support for FreeBSD

Monitis customers can monitor FreeBSD machines.

Press Release

San Jose 15 June, 2009 Monitis Inc., a leading provider of affordable easy-to-use enterprise-class systems management software as a service, today announces a release of monitoring agent for FreeBSD.

Monitis monitoring agent is a downloadable software, which runs on clients’ machines and collects performance and configuration metrics both for the machine on which they were installed as well as for the whole network.
Monitis main application takes measures towards detecting and preventing agent failure. By regularly sending messages from the agents Monitis can determine whether there is or there is not a problem.  If a problem exists, measures will be taken to correct it. Agents don’t ever use local storage, so any data that is collected is filled in a separate database on the main server.

Monitis Linux and Windows agents are widely used by large Monitis community (up to 50,000 users) and now with FreeBSD addition, users may monitor truly heterogeneous and distributed infrastructure. By combining the robustness of agent-based technology with the simplicity of agentless technology Monitis enables effortless systems management for its customers.

Monitis Adds an Amazon EC2 Monitoring Location

Amazon EC2 customers can now check their users’ web experience locally.

Press Release

San Jose 10 June, 2009 Monitis Inc., a leading provider of affordable easy-to-use enterprise-class systems management software as a service, today announces a new external monitoring location within Amazon network.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also known as Amazon EC2, offers a service that gives developers access to web-scale computing via cloud. The cloud computing concept combines the most recent IT trends, such as software as a service and Web 2.0, to make more applications and computing capacity easily available.

Monitis specializes in internal and external network, applications and servers fault and performance monitoring. Ensuring a seamless user experience in web applications, Monitis external monitoring specifically simulates the actions of end users from several countries across the globe. Load time of web content from networks situated in US, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia are constantly monitored and gauged by Monitis to provide knowledge about the speed of the web site to users from their respective countries. Monitis already has an excellent global network coverage, but it is adding an additional 7th monitoring site with extra value for Amazon cloud users.

Online business can be significantly affected by Web page load time. If every 100 ms of wait time costs Amazon 1% of profit, and every 0.5 seconds added to search page generation on Google drops traffic by 20%, it’s easy to see that it doesn’t take long for small increments in wait time add up to big costs to online business. As Amazon EC2 services become more and more popular application hosting solutions for Web 2.0 companies, one particular problem continues to be a nuisance: application latency. Monitis has added the Amazon EC2 monitoring location to its network to tackle this problem.

The latency of the Amazon EC2 servers will be monitored locally by Monitis EC2 monitor, giving a better indication of what is causing this latency: the user infrastructure, the EC2 instance, or the applications themselves. The Monitis monitor will measure EC2 server latency and provide performance data as if it were operating in the customer’s local network.

SaaS versus On-promise Software: WYSIWYG Principle

Posted by Hovhannes Avoyan | Posted in Articles | Posted on 05-06-2009

2

Experts, forecasters and IT reporting groups regularly cite performance failure rates of 30% and above in software product development undertakings. As a result every company recognizes that it will have on-premises software put on a shelf that either failed in performance or simply did not return the value of the investment for the product use and outcome. This results in the accepted understanding by all that there will be a certain amount of shelf ware. See http://www.it-cortex.com/Stat_Failure_Rate.htm for details.

Customer-vendor connection is very inadequate so far as on-premise software is concerned. The implementation is done by customer’s IT department. Even when vendor’s expert team is in the process, customization lessons are not fed back. The customer-vendor gap is more felt because the longer inventory has no harmful effect on a vendor and as such he has no incentive to see through the completion of the process. . For off-the-shelf software, the vendor has no ongoing concern that the customer continues to use the product – for the vendor a success is that the software is sold, not that it is properly implemented. In contrast, a SaaS (Software as a Service) vendor’s revenue depends on the renewal of subscription software, providing vendor incentive to implement the software successfully.

The real beauty is that the model thoroughly aligns the goals of the customer with the plans and ideas of the vendor to create a quality, functional, and tested solution. SaaS operates in only a single environment, eliminating the need to offer support for a multiplicity of different configurations. This streamlined productivity allows the engineering portion to solely focus on improving functionality, with goals of improving the product from the constant demand set by the large customer base. Constant customer feedback allows engineering to focus on incorporating new functionality. SaaS customers reap the benefit of the distilled best practices of the marketplace.

Count on the trustworthiness and expertise of SaaS to deliver the best outcome for both the customer and vendor. SaaS concentrates on only one thing, you, freeing you up to concentrate on incorporating the feedback of your new large customer base. SaaS customers are not simply subscribing to a service but receiving the best and most effective ideas the entire market has to offer.

In SaaS companies, customer satisfaction is management’s primary concern best measured by renewal percentages. Customers can easily get out of their contracts once yearly. Customer simply won’t continue a subscription if they don’t utilize the system or if there’s poor service.  It tells us that the product or service is not what the customer anticipated or is willing to continue to pay for far better than any customer satisfaction survey might indicate. People simply vote with their money.

This added dynamic withholds applications from running with flaws, which in turn greatly improves software quality for SaaS vendors. Since numerous other businesses and industries are an integral part of your operation and affected customers’ number is in the hundreds or thousands, as a SaaS vendor, you will need to work quickly to fix problems and issues. In doing so, you will avoid putting your renewal business in jeopardy.

With SaaS, you have a standardized platform that your customers will all use, and provide feedback on. There will be many different points of view on how the application can be improved. Over time, SaaS solutions begin to evoke strong best practices and garner constant flows of ideas for improvement and enhancement of the platform from the users.

Summarizing, with Enterprise Software, the customer rarely gets what they buy or want. With SaaS it’s the opposite. You get what is offered every single time. With SaaS there will never be a demonstration done just to trick a buyer into purchasing the item; instead all demonstrations display how the item is used and the purpose of the item. This is because the software is not implemented in a special way. What you see in the demonstration is what you actually get. What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) is exactly what SaaS is all about!
